Dr Sara Hungerford is a consultant physician and cardiologist who is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians as well as a registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council, United Kingdom. 

Dr Hungerford graduated in medicine from the University of NSW in 2009 and is currently completing her PhD at the University of New South Wales with the support of a prestigious Royal Australian College of Physicians Scholarship as well as an Australian Government Research Training program grant and a St Vincent’s Clinic travelling fellowship. Dr Hungerford completed her cardiology training at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney.

Dr Hungerford has a keen academic focus and maintains an academic appointment at the University of New South Wales as a Conjoint Associate Lecturer. She teaches medical students from the University on a regular basis. 

As a Fulbright scholar; Dr Hungerford's ongoing research seeks to better understand and predict the hemodynamic responses to transcatheter mitral and aortic valve implantation using non-invasive techniques such as two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography, arterial tonometry and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. She has collaborated with the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, received numerous research grants and has several publications. Dr Hungerford’s research has been presented at various national and international conferences, including the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand Annual Scientific Conference, Structural Heart Disease Australia and the American Heart Association Annual Scientific Conference.

Dr Hungerford specialises in structural heart disease of the aortic and mitral valve. She is highly skilled in advanced cardiac imaging including transthoracic echocardiography, stress echocardiography and transoesophageal echocardiography, and uses novel cardiac MRI techniques as part of her research.

Away from medicine, Sara has competed as a professional first-class cricketer for many years. First class representative teams included the Sydney Sixers, ACT Meteors, Surrey cricket club, the Auckland Hearts, and the NSW Breakers.
