Holter Monitor

Information

This test records your heart beats for a 24 hour period.

It may be requested if you are experiencing irregular heart rhythms, palpitations, dizziness or blackouts

Small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to a box which is attached to a belt, which is worn around your waist under your clothes.  While wearing this box you can perform normal daily activities but you cannot shower or get wet.  You should complete a diary particularly noting if you have any of your symptoms (palpitations, dizziness etc).

This test is risk and pain free.

Preparation

  • There is no need to fast
  • Shower before having your holter fitted, and do not apply any talcum powder or moisturisers. You will be unable to shower or get wet with the holter on
  • Take regular medications unless advised by your doctor

Duration

The holter is fitted one morning and removed the following morning. You will wear it for a total of twenty four hours.

The doctor will report your test and give you your results at your next visit or send them to your GP the next day.
