Exercise Stress Echocardiogram (stress echo)
Information
This test combines both a stress test and an echocardiogram.
The test is used to:
- measure the impact exercise has on the heart walls;
- evaluate whether there is evidence of heart disease; or
- evaluate the heart following a heart attack, stenting or cardiac surgery.
Sticky electrodes are applied to your chest to take an ECG recording and the sonographer performs a pre-exercise ultrasound.
Then you commence on the treadmill and continue to exercise until you reach your peak. You then return to the bed for further ultrasound imaging. Continuous ECG and blood pressure recordings are taken throughout the procedure.
